The General Post Office Building is located on Mannerheimintie in Helsinki.
Long Description:
A competition was held in 1934 for a design for a post office building. The winning design was submited by recently graduated architects Jorma Järvi and Erik Lindroos. Later architect Kaarlo Borg joined project. Interior designers Arttu Brummer, Runar Engblom, Birger Hahl, and Paavo Tynell were did the interior design.
The General Post Office was opened in November 1938. The General Post Office represents the Finnish Functionalism style, which was popular in 1930s. The building's ground plan stresses functionality and efficient use of space. This led to a thoroughly modern looking building, even in 1938.
In the 1950s, the building was expanded by adding an additional floor. The very first helicopter landing pad in Helsinki was built on the roof for use during the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.
The stamp was issued by Finland in 1939 to commemorate the opening of the post office building.
