Short Description:  

A monument commemorating the return of Marquis de Lafayette to Boston is located on the Boston Common near the Park Street T station on Tremont Street.

Long Description:

A  2.5' by 4.5' bronze  plaque is embedded in a 6' by 4.25 by 1.25' granite base honors Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. The plaque contains the image of Lafayette sculpted by John Francis Paramino and cast at the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The monument was installed on the Boston Common on  August 24, 1924 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the return the Marquis de Lafayette to Boston in 1824.

THIS MALL NAMED IN HONOR OF MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE
DISTINGUISHED FRENCH SOLDIER
MAJOR-GENERAL IN THE WAR OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE
AN ILLUSTRIOUS PATRIOT OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION
WHO NOBLY SERVED THE CAUSE OF LIBERTY ON TWO CONTINENTS
INVITED BY ACT OF CONGRESS TO REVISIT THE UNITED STATES
AS A GUEST OF THE NATION IN 1824
HE WAS WELCOMED WITH SIGNAL HONOR
AS HE PASSED ALONG THIS MALL
HE LAID THE CORNERSTONE OF BUNKER HILL MONUMENT
