Long Description:
Esplanade Park is a pedestrian oasis in downtown Helsinki. The park is about 0.25 miles long (380 meters) one block (70 meters) wide. It starts at the Havis Amanda Fountain in Market Square on the east and continues to the Svenska Teatern on the west.
The park contains a cafe, fountains, and statues. Many park benches line the north and south sides of the main avenue. The Esplanade is a very popular meeting place for both Helsinki residents and visitors to the city.
The stamp was issued by Finland in 1999 as part of the Europa series. it is based on a photo of the Esplanade taken by Markku Ulander. The photograph is taking facing west from about the mid-point of the eastern half of the park. The summer scene shows people strolling in the foreground with the statue of Johan Ludvig Runeberg in the background. Johan Ludvig Runeberg is the poet laureate of Finland who wrote, in Swedish, the words to the Finnish national anthem, Vårt Land.
