Epic Beings: Atlas Sculpture - Montréal, PQ, Canada

Interesting Places I've Photographed
Atlas Sculpture
Montréal, PQ, Canada
Topic: Epic Beings

GPS: N45° 29.303; W073° 35.492

Quick Description:

An Atlas statue is located at 4131 rue Sherbrooke Ouest in Montréal.

Long Description:

In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan who held up the celestial sphere. The original version of this Art Deco depiction of Atlas was created by Lee Oskar Lawrie in collaboration with Rene Paul Chambellan and installed on Fifth Avenue in 1937 opposite St. Patrick's Cathedral at an entrance to Rockefeller Center. This Atlas sculpture is clearly based on Lee Lawrie's famous work. However, in this version Atlas is carrying an armillary sphere but with a map of the world superimposed over the sphere.

This 18' tall fiberglass Atlas sculpture looks identical to the mass-produced sculptures used to for promotional purposes by the Jack LaLanne Fitness Centers that were very popular in the 1960's.
